Israel military says intercepted Houthi missile fired from Yemen

Israel’s military said Thursday it had intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, where Houthi rebels have repeatedly carried out attacks in what they claim is retaliation for Israel’s offensive in Gaza.

“Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in several areas in central Israel, a missile launched from Yemen was intercepted,” the military said in a statement.

Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency service reported that no one was injured by the missile itself, though one man was hurt while seeking shelter.

The Iran-backed Houthis have regularly launched missiles and drones at Israel since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, following a deadly Hamas attack on Israeli territory.

Houthi attacks briefly halted during a two-month ceasefire, but resumed after Israel renewed its campaign in the besieged enclave in March.

On Monday, the rebels warned they would impose a “naval blockade” on the Israeli port city of Haifa in response to Israel’s intensified military operations in Gaza.
