Abyan, Yemen — A tragic maritime accident off Yemen’s southern coast has claimed the lives of more than 20 African migrants after a smuggling boat sank late Saturday near Abyan Province.
The vessel, which was carrying around 150 people, capsized due to strong winds as it approached the shores of Shaqra and Zinjibar.
Bodies were recovered along the coastline early Sunday, while dozens remain missing.
Local rescue teams managed to save several survivors, many of whom were Ethiopian nationals, and transported them to nearby hospitals.
The operation continues amid difficult conditions and limited resources. Authorities have called for international intervention to help manage the growing crisis of irregular migration through Yemen, a nation already burdened by prolonged conflict and humanitarian struggles.
This tragedy highlights the immense risks migrants face while seeking safety and opportunity through treacherous sea routes that have become increasingly deadly.
