Gaza Crisis: 31 Israelis Urge Sanctions on Their Own Government

In a rare act of dissent, 31 Israeli citizens have signed a public letter calling on the international community to impose sanctions on Israel over its ongoing military campaign in Gaza.

The signatories—comprising academics, activists, and relatives of hostages—expressed deep concern over what they described as “epic proportions” of humanitarian catastrophe in the besieged enclave.

The letter coincides with mounting global pressure on Israel, as the United Nations warns Gaza is “on the brink of famine”. The group of Israelis stated that only external pressure could halt what they called a “suicidal path” of destruction, urging foreign governments to suspend arms deals, economic partnerships, and cultural collaborations until a ceasefire is achieved.

This appeal follows a broader petition signed by over 3,000 Israelis earlier this month, demanding “every possible sanction” to stop the war. The movement has sparked fierce backlash within Israel, with some lawmakers proposing legislation to penalize academics and public figures who support boycotts or criticize the war effort.

The signatories argue that Israel’s policies are not only devastating Gaza but also endangering its own citizens and regional stability. Their message: “Save us from ourselves.”
