Al Ahly president Mahmoud El Khatib has officially announced that he will not stand for re-election in the club’s upcoming board elections, citing medical advice to step away from daily pressures and begin a treatment phase.
In a statement released through Al Ahly’s official channels, El Khatib reflected on his eight years at the helm of the club, during which he led two terms as president:
“Eight years ago, we made a pledge to Al Ahly’s fans and members to work with dedication, vision and effort to keep Al Ahly always on top — with its history, values, and championships, alongside continuous development of the club’s facilities and member services.”
El Khatib expressed gratitude to his colleagues on the board and highlighted the collective achievements in sports, economic growth, administration, construction, and community services. He emphasized that every title, project, and accomplishment was the product of institutional teamwork and a shared understanding of the club’s stature locally, across Africa, and globally.
He revealed that doctors had repeatedly advised him to take a break in recent years, but the constant demands of the club forced him to return to daily responsibilities. Now, however, he stressed that it has become essential to fully adhere to medical recommendations and step aside.
With the elections less than two months away, El Khatib confirmed he will not be a candidate and placed full confidence in the abilities of others to lead the club into the future. He also pledged to offer advice and consultation until a new board is elected.
The outgoing president concluded his message with a call for members to participate in the upcoming General Assembly scheduled for Friday, September 19, 2025, to help shape the club’s future.
“I thank you all and wish you success in the next steps. May Al Ahly always remain a source of pride for its people, for Egyptian sport, and for our beloved country, Egypt.”
