Adam Boehler, the U.S. envoy for hostage affairs, confirmed that the door for negotiation with Hamas remains open, noting that the prospects of reaching an agreement regarding the hostages held in Gaza have increased.
Boehler made his remarks during the annual conference of The Jerusalem Post in Manhattan, where he explained that his mission requires communication with various entities, even those without a good reputation. He added, “Engagement is not a weakness, nor does it mean accepting something or letting others get away with their actions.”
He indicated that the U.S. may hold further discussions with Hamas, emphasizing that the right moment for an agreement is drawing closer. Boehler stated, “If Hamas wants to make a legitimate offer to release the hostages, we are always ready to listen.”
While he did not disclose details of the current negotiations, Boehler stressed that the United States is closer than ever to reaching a deal, citing Israeli military movements on the ground as a contributing factor.
Previous negotiations between Boehler and Hamas sparked Israeli outrage, particularly because they occurred without the knowledge of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Nevertheless, Boehler believes that the chances of reaching a deal have increased over time.
