Washington Urges Hamas to Respond to Updated Gaza Truce Proposal

Amid renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war in Gaza, the United States has called on Hamas to formally respond to an updated ceasefire proposal that could pave the way for a 60-day truce and the release of hostages.

The proposal, backed by Washington, Qatar, and Egypt, outlines a phased deal that includes the release of 10 living Israeli hostages and the return of 18 bodies, in exchange for a partial Israeli military withdrawal and expanded humanitarian aid access.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described the framework as “attainable,” citing strong American involvement and mounting pressure on both sides to reach a breakthrough.

However, Hamas has submitted amendments to the plan, demanding firmer guarantees from the U.S. to prevent Israel from resuming military operations if talks on a permanent ceasefire stall.

While Israel has accepted the Witkoff framework in principle, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to secure full cabinet approval amid internal divisions. Far-right ministers have voiced opposition to any deal that does not include Hamas’ disarmament and exile.

Negotiations continue in Doha, with mediators working to bridge gaps over key issues such as troop withdrawal zones, aid distribution mechanisms, and the timeline for hostage releases. Hamas insists on a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and has rejected proposals that would allow Israel to maintain a military presence in strategic corridors.

The updated proposal comes as humanitarian conditions in Gaza deteriorate further, with aid groups warning of famine and displacement affecting millions. Washington has emphasized the urgency of reaching a deal, with President Trump stating, “We want peace. We want to get the hostages back. And I think we’re close to doing it”.
