The Council of the League of Arab States convened an extraordinary session in Cairo on Sunday, issuing a firm condemnation of Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland, the self‑declared breakaway region in northwestern Somalia.
In its statement, the Council described the recognition as “null and void” and driven by political, security, and economic agendas. Arab representatives stressed that Somaliland remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, in line with international law and the Arab League Charter.
The Council also rejected any measures resulting from this recognition, warning against attempts to exploit northern Somali ports for foreign military bases or to facilitate the forced displacement of Palestinians. The declaration reaffirmed the Arab League’s consistent position in defense of Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.
Somalia’s permanent representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Ali Abdi Awrai, briefed the Council on the implications of Israel’s move, calling it an assault on Somalia’s territorial integrity. Member states expressed full solidarity with Somalia and pledged support against external interference.
Regional blocs including the Gulf Cooperation Council and the African Union have also joined the condemnation, underscoring widespread rejection of Israel’s decision.
